Ruth looks at the first squad press conference for Euro 2020 with Ethan Ampadu and Rubin Colwill.

On May 26th, the FAW rolled out the first press conference directly related to the Euros. Speaking from the training base in Portugal, Ethan Ampadu and Rubin Colwill spoke enthusiastically about the preparations, and the great morale in camp.

Ampadu showed how much he’s matured from the 15 year old who trained with the equivalent squad back in May 2016. Happily ‘dodging’ the awkward questions, when asked about Bale’s retirement, Ethan simply said ‘That’s football … you get rumours here there and everywhere. … Nothing’s been said.’ A smile, a knowing look, but no more.

On his own future and preference for defence or midfield:

‘I’m comfortable playing in any of those positions. I’m still evolving, … still learning. For the moment, my favourite position is wherever I can play.’

Probably the most insightful aspect was Ethan’s honesty in volunteering that this is a big summer for him, and that his Chelsea future will probably be affected by his Cymru performances in the upcoming tournament.

One for the future

Including Colwill was a nod to the players unlikely to be named in the 26-man squad on the 30th. The young Cardiff City academy product shared his thrill at being called up for the Portugal training squad.

Self-effacing and obviously loving life, Colwill is living the dream. Professional debut in February, first u21’s cap in March and now a training squad call up with Cymru, the Neath native looked every bit the cat that got the cream. ‘Pinching myself,’ he admitted, ‘Got to reach for the stars.’

Some of the discussion focused on Colwill following Ben Davies’ footsteps, moving from Ysgol Gyfun Ystalyfera into professional football. But it sounds like Kieffer Moore is the senior player keeping a supportive watch on the bluebird’s #40.
