After the spirited performance on Thursday night, Cymru travelled to Copenhagen to take on Denmark as these Nations League games come thick and fast.
Embed from Getty ImagesWith four games in this international break, Cymru manager Craig Bellamy made six changes from the team that lost 1-0 to Portugal. Connor Roberts, Chris Mepham, Charlie Savage, Dan James, Sorba Thomas and Kieffer Moore replaced Jay Dasilva, Ben Cabango, Jordan James, David Brooks, Lewis Koumas and Josh Sheehan. Denmark made just the one change from their 3-2 defeat to Norway, with Gustav Isaksen coming in for Victor Froholdt.
Embed from Getty ImagesThis was the twelfth match between the two nations, with Denmark leading 7-4. A strange fact is that in three of those four Cymru wins, the winner was scored by a future manager. Craig Bellamy scored the winner in the last two victories in 1998 and 2008, and Mark Hughes scored the only goal in the victory in 1987.
Embed from Getty ImagesThe game started the same way as Thursday night’s game against Portugal, with Denmark controlling possession and just the odd flashes of Cymru possession, mostly in the middle third. Denmark started pushing for the opener with a few close calls, finally making the breakthrough in the 24th minute. The Danes made a fast break from deep in their own half, tearing the Cymru team apart and quickly making their way deep into the Cymru half. Gustav Isaksen stormed down the left wing, putting in a great cross for an excellent finish from Rasmus Højlund. Thankfully, our old friend VAR stepped in and rescued Cymru again, ruling there was an offside in the build-up.
Embed from Getty ImagesDenmark didn’t take their foot off the pedal for the rest of the first half, looking the most likely to score, keeping the game at 0-0 with a mixture of Cymru defending, bad finishing and Danny Ward’s right-hand post keeping it level. Cymru came close in the final minutes of the half when Connor Roberts’ shot from six yards out was tipped over the bar by Filip Jørgensen in the Danish goal.
The second half continued in the same vein, with the Danes taking full control early on. In the 53rd minute, after a foul by Neco Williams just off the right-hand corner of the Cymru box, the free-kick taken by Mikkel Damsgaard was perfectly delivered into the box. Højlund stretched out a foot, leaving Ben Davies no choice but to do the same, with the ball coming off the unfortunate Davies for an own goal.
Embed from Getty ImagesThen in the 66th minute, Neco Williams again pushed over a Danish player in the same area of the pitch that led to the opening goal. Damsgaard again put in a great delivery to the far post, with a header being cleared off the line by Kieffer Moore. Unfortunately, the ball landed at the feet of Gustav Isaksen, who fired home from around the penalty spot.
The Danes managed to see out the game, with the odd attack from Cymru but again not looking like scoring.
Unfortunately for Cymru, it was another defeat, very similar to Thursday night against Portugal. Since losing to Bosnia and Herzegovina in the World Cup play-off, it is now two draws and three defeats. It doesn’t get any easier for Bellamy and the team, with Norway coming to Cardiff on Thursday with a certain Mr Haaland—gulp!
