Stephen (@StephenJBaker) have written our match preview for this crucial clash.

To be honest, this is the one preview that I didn’t really want to write. It’s very hard to be positive when writing anything about Cymru v England. Friday morning’s performance didn’t help either, not being in the best of form and having to beat a team who we haven’t beaten since Mark Hughes scored the winner against them in Wrexham back in May 1984.

Despite the lackluster performance against USA, England still have that hold over us … where even an under-performing England seems to catch us out. We need to win, which will leave us open at the back, up against some world class forwards.

It’s hard to pick a probable team for the 3rd group matches, you never know how many players a manager will rest. I think Southgate might go with this Starting XI

  • Jordan Pickford (Everton)
  • Luke Shaw (Manchester Utd)
  • Harry Maguire (Manchester Utd)
  • John Stones (Manchester City)
  • Kyle Walker (Manchester City)
  • Declan Rice (West Ham)
  • Jude Bellingham (Dortmund)
  • Phil Foden (Manchester City)
  • Mason Mount (Chelsea)
  • Raheem Sterling (Chelsea)
  • Harry Kane (Tottenham)

I don’t think Rob Page will make too many changes from the starting line-up on Friday. I’m guessing Joe Allen will start for Ramsey and I think he will go with Brennan Johnson instead of Harry Wilson. Of course Danny Ward is the forced change.

Sorry none of this is helping!

For the first two countries we played against in this World Cup, the US and Iran, we had a combined 3 match history. Obviously we have more of a history against England. The first game between Cymru and England was in 1879.

We have a playing record against England of;

  • Played 103
  • Won 14
  • Drawn 21
  • Lost 68

The fourteen wins by Cymru are split evenly seven at home and seven away. The first win in 1881 and the last 103 years later in 1984.

Pob Lwc Cymru!
